MILLVILLE, N.J., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Police in New Jersey said a man arrested for shoplifting at a Walmart store said the crime was his payment for losing a bet.
Millville police said Irwin Krakow, 58, who was caught taking items from the store Saturday afternoon, told them he lost a bet and was given the choice to either shoplift $50 worth of merchandise from Walmart or run "through the street naked," The Daily Journal, Vineland, N.J., reported Tuesday.
However, police said the items Krakow was caught with only amounted to $43.82 worth of merchandise, several dollars short of his goal.
Investigators did not say what the bet was about.
Krakow allegedly told police during questioning he now wishes he had streaked because "the fine would be smaller."
He was arrested and charged with shoplifting.
