SOUTHAMPTON, England, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A burglar who was caught by an 84-year-old widow armed with a cane and her 59-year-old daughter has been sentenced to three years in an English prison.

Leon Ingram of New Milton in Hampshire pleaded guilty to burglary, The Mirror reported. He was sentenced Wednesday in Southampton Crown Court.

Ingram, 34 years old and 6-foot-3 inches tall, is a half-century younger and a foot taller than Doris Thiele. But he ended up smashing a glass door with his head to get away from her and her daughter, Helen Thiele.

Thiele said she hit Ingram with the cane while Helen held him down. She thought about hitting him with a vase but decided that might kill him.

"Luckily for him I just wanted to get him out of my house -- I didn't want him dead. I think I was quite restrained," she said.

While Ingram was able to get away, police officers followed the blood trail he left and arrested him at his apartment near the Thiele home, This Is Hampshire.net reported.

Mother and daughter later received police awards for courage.
