LA PORTE, Ind., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Authorities in Indiana said they used a stun gun to take down a sword-wielding man who refused to leave his smoke-filled house during a fire he allegedly set.

LaPorte County sheriff's deputies said Peter Thompson, 50, wouldn't evacuate when emergency responders were summoned to a fire about 6 p.m. Friday, the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune reported Tuesday.

Deputies said Thompson was found to be concealing a sword behind his back and refused to drop the weapon when ordered. The deputies struggled with Thompson and he was subdued by a jolt from a deputy's stun gun.

Springfield Township Fire Chief Steve Marvel said Thompson had set items in the home on fire and the flames had dissipated by the time firefighters arrived.

Authorities said they were seeking charges against Thompson for criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement.
