NEW YORK, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A New York couple said neighbors are trying to have them evicted because their daughter brings her dog to visit and "sing."

Rita and Murray Hyman said an appeals court sided with the Bonnie House co-op board, allowing the board to go ahead with eviction proceedings against the couple for violating a rule against "pet harboring," the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

The Hymans said the Maltese, Rocky, does not live with them, but frequently visits during the day with their daughter. Rita Hyman, 62, who was disabled by a 2003 car crash, described Rocky as her "therapy dog." She said he likes to join in when she sings, causing the noises cited in the complaints.

"Rocky gives me a whole different outlook on life and keeps me going," she said. "They've hurt me so much by trying to take away our special relationship."

The couple said the dog is also a comforting presence for Rita's 85-year-old father, a Holocaust survivor who lives next door.

The Hymans said they will continue to fight the eviction.
