GLENVIEW, Ill., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- An Illinois woman who discovered an envelope containing $1,000 on a sidewalk said she is searching for the rightful owner of the cash.

Shannon Dowdle of Glenview said she found the cash-stuffed envelope outside a Skokie shopping center Dec. 21 and workers at three nearby stores told her no one had reported the money missing, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

"I didn't count it until I got into the car and I was like, 'Oh gosh,'" Dowdle said. "All these thoughts went through my mind. I was just sick to my stomach.

"I thought somebody would really be missing it," she said.

Dowdle's husband, Rick, said he returned to the area two days later and asked the manager of a store if anyone had come by asking about the money. The manager said an elderly couple had come by asking about the envelope, but they refused to leave their names or contact information.

"The manager said the couple was pretty upset," Rick Dowdle said. "She said (they) thought someone had found it and kept it."

The family said they are hoping the couple will come forward and claim the cash.
