Lugman Asad told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he was eating lunch in the back of the L&A Food Market around 3 p.m. Tuesday when he came out and saw a man pointing a gun to the head of his son, Wisam, the store owner.

Asad said he grabbed the gun from the man as he fired a shot.

Three or four customers who were in the store at the time jumped on the gunman and one hit him with a pickle jar, police spokeswoman Anne Schwartz said.

The man was arrested at the scene.

Puppy rescued from apartment dumpster

OKLAHOMA CITY, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- An Oklahoma animal group said it is looking for a new home for a puppy rescued from a dumpster by an apartment complex groundskeeper.

Tiffany Shawareb, manager of Windsor Village Apartments in Oklahoma City, said a groundskeeper heard a noise coming from the dumpster and discovered the puppy inside a taped-shut cardboard box, KFOR-TV, Oklahoma City, reported Wednesday.

The Bella Foundation, an organization aimed at helping pay for veterinary care, said the canine has been temporarily adopted by Oklahoma City resident Curtis Whitener.

Whitener said the puppy, which he named Kory, shows signs of having been abused, including keeping her tail between her legs.

"She won't lift it up," he said. "It's a confidence thing. She will wag her tail, but she wags it between her legs because she's afraid to show affection. She's afraid she's going to get in trouble for that."

The foundation said Kory appears to be a German shepherd-pit bull mix or a shepherd-boxer mix.

Authorities said they have opened an animal cruelty investigation.

Speeding dad ticketed with wife in labor

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- New Hampshire State Police said they will not back off a speeding ticket given to a man who was rushing his wife to the hospital while she was in labor.

Police Maj. Russell Conte said John Coughlin was spotted by a trooper driving at more than 100 mph on a 55 mph road at 3:30 a.m. Sept. 18, WMUR-TV, Manchester, N.H., reported Wednesday.

The trooper attempted to pull Coughlin over and the motorist called 911 to explain he was rushing his wife, Angela, to a Manchester hospital because she was in labor, Conte said. The trooper was informed of the situation by dispatchers and escorted the couple to the hospital, where he used his discretion in issuing the ticket.

"By his own action, he put himself, his wife, the life of his unborn child and the motoring public in a very dangerous situation," Conte said.

However, Coughlin has vowed to fight the ticket in court.

"There's no lesson to be learned here," he said. "You're still going to go fast in an emergency situation. You're still going to do what needs to be done."

754-pound tuna sells for $400,000

TOKYO, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- The first auction of the year at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market saw a 754-pound blue fin tuna sell for nearly $400,000.

The blue fin tuna, a species highly regarded for sushi making, was purchased Tuesday by a joint bid from a Tokyo restaurant and a Hong Kong sushi chain, the BBC reported Wednesday.

The fish, which was caught off the Japanese island of Hokkaido, was one of 500 to be sold in the fish market's first auction of the year Tuesday.

Tsukiji market traders said the price of tuna has been rising due to increased Chinese demand for sushi and tightened restrictions put in place due to overfishing concerns.
