The news organization said Assange received 25 percent of the votes in the online poll, with runners-up including President Barack Obama, Facebook mastermind Mark Zuckerberg, Apple chief Steve Jobs and Chilean miner Edison Pena.
Assange, 39, who first made headlines in July with the release of 90,000 secret military documents about the Afghanistan war, recently gained further prominence with the release of 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables.
Assange is currently facing a sex crime charge in Sweden.
