BALTIMORE, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Baltimore police said members of the marine unit jumped into the Inner Harbor to rescue Penny, a black Labrador mix, from the cold winter water.
One officer, Americus Rambeau, said he donned his cold-water rescue suit and swam under two piers to reach Penny Wednesday night after the canine ran away from her home and plunged into the water, The Baltimore Sun reported Friday.
"It was the right thing to do. (Penny) was struggling. Exhausted," Rambeau said.
Police said Penny was taken to an animal control facility to receive treatment for cold-water exposure and hypothermia.
Rachel Naumann, 25, the canine's owner, said 1-year-old Penny got out Wednesday while Naumann's roommate was signing for a package and they could find no sign of the dog after hours of searching. She said she heard about the rescue after it was witnessed by a "friend of a friend."
