NYC bridge named for former Mayor Ed Koch

NEW YORK, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- New York City officials announced the 59th St./Queensboro Bridge will be named in honor of former Mayor Ed Koch.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the naming Wednesday at an 86th birthday party for the former official at Gracie Mansion, the New York Daily News reported.

Koch said he was honored by the naming of the bridge, which he has driven on "hundreds of times, if not more," but conceded it could take a while for the new name to become widely used with the public.

"I hope it will be sooner, but it will probably be 50 years before people refer to it that way," he said.

Failed base jumper arrested in Moscow

MOSCOW, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Police in Moscow said they arrested a base jumper who plunged from a 35-story hotel Thursday but was stopped when his parachute became stuck on a billboard.

Oleg Medenko, 32, who claims to have completed more than 40 base jumps from skyscrapers in Moscow, was arrested after becoming stuck on a billboard during his stunt, which began atop the Central Tourist's House, RIA Novosti reported.

"This jump was illegal since it was not approved by the hotel and local authorities or with rescuers," police said.

The jumper was rescued and police said he was arrested and may face a charge of hooliganism.

Sheriff accidentally shoots own hand

POCATELLO, Idaho, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- An Idaho sheriff said his "pride is fractured" but he is not otherwise seriously injured after accidentally shooting himself in the hand.

Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said he was outside of his Pocatello home admiring a gun he received as a gift from a cousin when he placed his hand on top of the barrel to try putting the hammer back down, KIFI-TV, Idaho Falls, Idaho, reported.

Nielsen said his thumb slipped and the gun went off, discharging a bullet through the fleshy part of his hand near his little finger. The sheriff said the bullet did not hit any ligaments or tendons.

"I can say I shot the sheriff," Nielsen joked.

He was treated for the injury at a local hospital.

"My pride is fractured, but my hand is fine," he said.

Woman demands more fudge, bites cop

EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman accused of biting a police officer during a fracas over a hot fudge sundae was given probation and community service after pleading guilty.

Elaine Emter, 33, of Edmonton, Alberta, pleaded guilty Wednesday to causing a disturbance and resisting arrest, yielding her 18 months of probation with 40 hours of community service, the Edmonton Sun reported.

The incident will be removed from Emter's record if she successfully completes the conditions of her discharge, Judge Donna Groves ruled.

Crown prosecutor Laura Marr said Emter became disruptive at a McDonald's drive-through March 15 and insisted there was not enough hot fudge on her sundae. However, workers would not exchange the item without a receipt.

Marr said officers arrived and questioned Emter while she was still in the parking lot and she was "in their faces" shouting.

The prosecutor said Emter tried to drive away, but was stopped and informed she was being charged with causing a disturbance. However, the woman refused to get out of her car and one of the officers had to place her in a choke hold so she could be handcuffed. Marr said Emter then bit one of the officers and they twice used a stun gun on her head to subdue her.
