NORTH BERGEN, N.J., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A drunk New Jersey man locked himself inside a portable toilet that required bolt cutters to free him, police said.

The porta-potty was locked for transport Friday morning after North Bergen's Winter Fest Parade, Lt. Christopher Brignola told The Jersey Journal of Jersey City. A pedestrian walking by heard a call for help from within, and police and a rescue squad came to the scene.

The 61-year-old man, who was not identified, was taken to Palisades Medical Center for observation and later released. He had apparently been trapped in the toilet overnight.

"We are instructing our employees that from now on they are supposed to open the door and look inside before padlocking it," Brignola said.

"No one has ever heard of anything like this happening here," township spokesman Paul Swibinski said.
