SPARTANBURG, Calif., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Authorities in South Carolina said a motel guest acting on a bogus phone call trashed his hotel room to free a "midget" next door.

Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies said Joseph Jones, 73, said a male caller to his room at the Motel 6 instructed him there were cameras hidden around his room and instructed him to break the television and mirrors to get rid of them, WXII-TV, Winston-Salem, N.C., reported Thursday.

The caller then instructed Jones to break into the next room to free a trapped "midget." Deputies said he managed to break through the wall with a wrench.

A deputy spoke with the caller when he again called while Jones was talking to the authorities. The call was from a blocked number and the caller claimed to have dialed the "wrong number."

Victor Glover Sr., vice president of safety and security for Motel 6's parent company, said the incident mirrors previous occurrences at locations across the country.

Jones was not charged but he was asked to leave the motel.
