BROCKTON, Mass., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Organizers of a Massachusetts world-record attempt said they gathered more than 800 people together wearing Santa Claus hats.
The organizers of the Brockton event Sunday afternoon said they are working to verify the unofficial count of 814 people, which would beat the 700 Santa-hat record set by people in Mullingar, Ireland, last year, the Boston Herald reported Monday.
"We're bringing attention to the City of Brockton and its history," said organizer John Merian.
Brockton had previously held the record of 507 in 2008.
Organizers said the city was home to James Edgar, the first man to dress as Santa at Edgar's Department Store in 1890.
"Edgar was a philanthropic man and brought to life the character of Santa Claus. So this event is a way to honor him and bring our city together to have fun," Merian said.
