Prisoners will get less food

NEW YORK, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Reducing the number of slices of bread inmates receive each day will save New York City about $350,000 per year, officials said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to cut prisoner rations from eight slices of whole-wheat bread daily to six slices as part of a $1.6 billion budget adjustment, the New York Daily News reported.

The move would knock about 160 calories off the daily diet for inmates, and nutritionists said that is probably a good thing.

"They should be properly fed, but the majority of them don't need those extra calories," said Manhattan nutritionist Keri Glassman.

The average diet for male inmates is close to 3,000 calories daily, slightly more than recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The city may also remove chocolate and vanilla pudding from the Rikers Island jail menu, and black pepper is also on the hit list.

"Since food is a big part of our budget, we tried to see what fell into (nutrition) guidelines and found we could make this small cut," said Corrections spokeswoman Sharman Stein.
