Witnesses said the man stopped several passersby near the bank and offered them $1,000 for a ride to Santa Cruz.

Police said they are searching for the man, described as in his 40s or 50s with poor hygiene, and anyone who may have taken him up on his $1,000 offer.

"That $1,000 belongs to the bank," Capitola Sgt. Mark Gonzalez said.
