Italian police search for 'lion'

BOLOGNA, Italy, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Italian police said they are searching for a reported lion, which they said may be a puma, in the hills near Bologna.

Police said a truck driver reported spotting a "young lion" Thursday morning and the animal "may in fact be a puma that was reported further north, near Ferrara, a week ago," ANSA reported Thursday.

Investigators said a nearby circus isn't missing any animals and the big cat may have been an exotic pet set free once it became too large to keep.

The search for the big cat comes after police and wildlife authorities searched near Florence for a reported tiger. The animal was never found.
