HONG KONG, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Hong Kong tourism officials said they have banned a tour guide caught on video berating tourists for not spending enough money in shops.
The Tourism Industry Council of Hong Kong revoked the qualification certificate from tour guide Li Qiaozhen, known as Ah Zhen, after the Anhui Tourism Administration filed a complaint about the August incident, China Daily reported Monday.
The group from China's Anhui province complained they were insulted and verbally abused by Li for refusing to buy goods at a jewelry shop. One member of the tour group caught the incident on video.
Li, who has the right to appeal the decision, can file for a new certificate in 6 months. Her employers were fined $6,000.
Hong Kong's tour guide trade union said "compulsive shopping" was part of the agreement for the tour group due to the "zero tour group fare."
"Without fare, tour guides have to earn commissions from shopping spending instead," an official said.
