HALAM, England, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- British giant-vegetable growers preparing to display their creations at an annual event say the practice is a time-consuming and delicate one.
Peter Glazebrook of Halam, England, who is preparing for the coming weekend's National Vegetable Society's annual Bath & West National Gardening Show in Shepton Mallet, England, said growing giant vegetables takes more effort than just planting seeds, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.
"I am full-time at it and my wife, Mary, does a lot of work for me as well," Glazebrook said. "We don't have a holiday, we just go away when we do the shows. I get up at 6 and I am usually out until it's dark."
Joe Atherton of Mansfield Woodhouse, who holds a world record for his 19-foot, 2-inch carrot, said location is also a big part of growing big veggies.
"You have to have the right facilities and the right compost in the tube so it can grow without stopping," he said. "The compost has to be very fine."
The event has prizes for 23 categories, 18 dealing with the weight of the giant vegetables and five regarding length.
