Failed cigarette toss destroys car

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Police in New Jersey said a woman's car was engulfed in flames when she tried and failed to flick a still-burning cigarette out her window.

South Brunswick police said the 19-year-old Rocky Hill woman, whose name was not released, was driving through South Brunswick Monday morning when the inside of her 1998 Honda Civic was ignited by the cigarette, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.

The woman was able to escape the vehicle without injury but the car was destroyed by the flames. The fire was put out by South Brunswick's Monmouth Junction Fire Department.

Zookeepers foil chimp's escape

OKLAHOMA CITY, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Keepers at the Oklahoma City Zoo said a chimpanzee that made it past an electric fence into a dry moat was coaxed back into its enclosure after about 2 hours.

Zoo Executive Director Dwight Scott said Mwami, a 22-year-old male chimpanzee, was chased up a tree Monday afternoon by fellow chimps because it "probably was doing stuff in the group he shouldn't have been doing," KFOR-TV, Oklahoma City, reported.

Scott said Mwami somehow made it past the chimpanzee enclosure's electric fence and into a dry moat surrounding the area. He said zookeepers used fire extinguishers and cotton candy to steer the chimp back toward the enclosure while emergency teams armed with tranquilizer darts observed.

The executive director said the chimp was back inside the exhibit about 2 hours after it escaped. He said officials were planning the review the layout of the electric fence.

Men escape decapitation under truck

GETTYSBURG, S.D., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Police in South Dakota said two men are lucky to be alive after driving under a stalled semi and flatbed in a pickup truck.

Potter County Sheriff Alan McClain said Shane Hanson, 29, of Clearwater, Minn., was driving on U.S. 212, about 5 miles west of Gettysburg, at about 6:15 a.m. Saturday with Chad Fobbe, 36, of Monticello, Minn., when they drove under the semi and its empty flatbed, which was stuck with its wheels off the road, the Aberdeen (S.D.) American News reported.

"They ran straight under the trailer," McClain said. "They couldn't see it."

McClain said both men were able to exit the vehicle.

"I'm amazed because they should have been decapitated," he said.

The sheriff said the men were treated at a local hospital.

Bike stolen during arrest
