FLORENCE, Italy, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A purse-snatcher's escape went awry Tuesday when he ducked into a building only to realize it was a police station, bemused police officials said.

The alleged thief, described as a young Romanian, apparently thought he was running into a post office where he may have intended to blend into the crowd, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. Instead, he looked up to see himself among police officers.

The man's victims showed up shortly after and the man was arrested.

"It was like something out of 'I Soliti Ignoti,'" an onlooker told ANSA, referring to the 1958 Italian comedy starring Marcello Mastroianni in the story of a band of small-time crooks who try to burgle a government-owned pawn shop.
