KENNESAW, Ga., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Police in Georgia said students were evacuated from a university building after a pair of Civil War-era cannonballs were found in a rarely used room.

Authorities said a Kennesaw State University staff member called police Monday and reported the cannonballs were found in a display case in a rarely used room and no one seemed to know whether they were still live, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County Police said the building was evacuated and morning classes were canceled while the bomb squad removed the cannonballs from the facility.

Pierce said the cannonballs were detonated using explosives at an isolated location. He said there was no way to tell whether the items were live.

Classes resumed inside the building at 2 p.m.
