SAN DIEGO, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- San Diego residents who complained of mysterious radio interference messing with their garage door remotes said the problem disappeared nearly two weeks later.

The residents, who said some sort of interference was causing remotes for garage doors and car locks to malfunction, said the interference ceased without explanation Thursday, the same day the San Diego Union-Tribune ran a story on the problem, the Union-Tribune reported Wednesday.

Beverly Bradley said a neighbor knocked on her door Thursday night to ask if her issues had disappeared along with his.

"He said it was the first time he had come home from work and been able to trigger his garage door," Bradley said. "I checked with other neighbors who said their remote (car) keys were also working. So somebody changed something."

The chief engineer of a U.S. garage door opener manufacturer said the devices are vulnerable to powerful radio systems on Navy ships.

A Navy spokesman said he could not confirm whether a local ship was to blame.
