COTTINGLEY, England, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- British officials said they are reviewing the case of a man whose benefits were canceled two days after surgery to remove a brain tumor.

Bryan Haigh, 50, of Cottingley, England, said he began receiving Employment and Support Allowance benefits in September when his failing eyesight made him unable to perform his duties as a scaffolder, The Mirror reported Wednesday.

Haigh said doctors investigating the condition found an unrelated brain tumor and he told a Department for Work and Pensions benefits review panel July 18 that he was due for surgery to remove the tumor two days later.

However, Haigh said he received a letter from the department July 22 saying he was "officially deemed fit to work" and would no longer be receiving benefits.

Haigh, a father of four, said he has 32 staples in his head and doctors warned him he could experience seizures during the next six months.

The Department for Work and Pensions said the case is being reviewed.
