TENAFLY, N.J., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Police in New Jersey said they were searching for a young black bear seen wandering along a stream near the Knickerbocker Country Club golf course.
Police Capt. Thomas Yurkin said the male bear was seen walking along the stream bordering the Tenafly golf course Sunday night, and police have increased patrols in the area to keep a lookout for the animal, The Record of Bergen County, N.J., reported Monday.
"We have additional patrol monitoring the area, but we think that most likely, he's going back to wherever he came from," Yurkin said. "Our position is not to go into the woods and look for him."
State wildlife officials said the bear likely followed tributaries and wandered to the area from the northwestern part of the state, where black bears are commonly spotted.
The state Division of Fish and Game said the search for the bear, which was first spotted at about noon Sunday, was called off due to darkness shortly after 7 p.m. EDT.
