MADISON, Wis., July 30 (UPI) -- Police in Wisconsin said three young men reported being robbed at gunpoint while attempting to buy marijuana from a "friend of a friend."
Madison police said an 18-year-old Madison man, a Verona 17-year-old and a Fitchburg 19-year-old were planning to buy some marijuana Tuesday in celebration of the 17-year-old's birthday, The (Madison) Capital Times reported Friday.
"The trio drove to a park on Cimarron Trail where they met up with this friend of a friend," police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.
DeSpain said a stranger showed up at the meeting site at about 9:45 p.m. and displayed a handgun.
"The would-be marijuana dealer and the stranger carried on as if they did not know each other," DeSpain said. "The gunman threatened to kill the victims, and then robbed them of money, a cellphone and a backpack."
Police described the suspect as a black man between the ages of 20 and 25.
