ESKILSTUNA, Sweden, July 20 (UPI) -- Two Swedish zoos said they each marked the birth of a baby tapir, a rare animal with only about 30 annual births in captivity, within a week of one another.

The Oland Zoo in the southeastern part of the country said a female tapir foal, an especially rare occurrence as two out of three tapirs born are male, was born July 9 and is still waiting to be named, The Local reported Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a male tapir born July 14 at the Parken Zoo in Eskilstuna was named after Swedish Prince Daniel in honor of being born on the birthday of the royal's wife, Princess Victoria.

Helena Olsson, director of the Parken Zoo, said the newborn tapirs, which are native to rain forests and river basins in Central and South America, may end up as a mated pair, but the decision is up to a special coordinator.

"There is a coordinator who works with figuring out which ones fit together, so you do not know if it will be Oland or Madrid for Daniel," Olsson said.
