CONGHAM, England, July 19 (UPI) -- Organizers of the World Snail Racing Championships in England said this year's winner traveled a distance of 13 inches in 3 minutes, 41 seconds.

Hilary Scase, an official with the Congham, Norfolk, competition, said Sidney, a snail owned by Claire Lawrence, 62, of Litcham, Norfolk, bested 200 competitors by making the short trek from an inner circle to the larger circle finish line in the best time, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

Organizers said Lawrence was presented with a silver tankard filled with lettuce in honor of Sidney's accomplishment.

Scase said Congham, which has hosted the competition for more than 25 years, is the ideal location for snail racing.

"Snails like damp conditions and as Congham is surrounded by ponds and is very low-lying it is just right for snails. Congham is to snail racing what Newmarket is to horse racing," she said.
