MELBOURNE, July 8 (UPI) -- An accused Australian drug kingpin who has been behind bars for almost two years is trying to get out of jail in time to attend his daughter's wedding.

At a hearing Wednesday in Melbourne, lawyers for Pasquale Barbaro said he could post as much as $3.45 million Australian ($3 million U.S.), The Age reported. Barrister Con Heliotis said Barbaro could be monitored electronically.

Barbaro's daughter is to be married this weekend. He reportedly told a prison psychologist he expects to be free in time to attend.

Barbaro, arrested in August 2008, is charged with arranging the smuggling of several tons of Ecstasy into Melbourne concealed in cans labeled as tomatoes. He is also charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

Prosecutors say Barbaro is likely to disappear if he is freed. Heliotis said the trial is likely to be delayed until at least 2013 and to last for a year once it gets under way -- so his client would have served six years without a guilty verdict.
