BLOOMINGTON, Ind., July 6 (UPI) -- Washington state's elusive "barefoot bandit" may have stolen a plane in Indiana and crash-landed it off an island in the Bahamas, police say.

Colton Harris-Moore, 19, has been a fugitive since April 2008, when he fled a group home in the Seattle area, The Everett (Wash.) Herald reports. He has been blamed for a string of thefts in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, and investigators say he has been moving east.

A car Harris-Moore is believed to have stolen in Illinois was found in the Bloomington, Ind., area last Thursday, the Bloomington Herald-Times reports. Then a small plane went missing during the weekend and was recovered off the Bahamas.

Harris-Moore is believed to have stolen several planes. Authorities say he is a self-taught pilot who studied the subject on the Internet.

His mother, Pam Kohler, told the Herald in a recent interview she hoped her son would use his skills to leave the United States.
