CAPE TOWN, South Africa, June 18 (UPI) -- South African companies making vuvuzela horns said the World Cup is expected to lead to international demand for the noisy instrument.

Neil van Schalkwyk, who first began mass-producing vuvuzelas in South Africa, said the popularity of the horns at soccer games, and especially the World Cup, is expected to bring international demand among fans of the sport, especially in Britain, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

Van Schalkwyk said his company is prepared to expand its British presence if vuvuzelas prove popular at the country's soccer games, and one retailer, Sainsbury's, said it is already having trouble keeping up with demand.

An even louder horn, a traditional kuduzela horn based on the horns of the kudu antelope, was banned from Word Cup stadiums by FIFA, the international governing board for soccer, because officials feared the larger and heavier instruments could be used as weapons by disgruntled fans.

However, multiple South African companies said they are working on making kuduzelas from a lighter plastic so they can join, and possibly replace, vuvuzelas at soccer games once the World Cup ends.
