Man learns casino losses not deductible
DETROIT, June 17 (UPI) -- Almost $350 has been seized from former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's prison commissary account for restitution to the city, officials say.
Russell Marlan, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, said the money was taken under regulations allowing the seizure of half of all deposits of more than $50, The Detroit News reported. The rules also limit the amount inmates can spend.
Kilpatrick was imprisoned May 25 after a judge found he violated probation by hiding assets. He had been making regular monthly payments, reducing the $1 million restitution to $860,000, but those stopped when he was jailed.
Now, he owes a little less.
"It's not a huge amount, but we will continue to monitor his accounts and will plug away at his restitution," Marlan said.
Marlan said there were three deposits into Kilpatrick's commissary account since he became an inmate. Marlan could not disclose where the money came from because of privacy regulations.
