KENNER, La., June 16 (UPI) -- A suburban New Orleans cab driver was arrested for allegedly locking a tourist in his car until she agreed to pay a 10 percent tip.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said a 57-year-old Texas woman told them she was taking a Yellow-Checker Cab Friday from her hotel to Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner at about 3:15 p.m. when driver Sohail Kahn, 37, told her he would be adding a 10 percent tip to the $33 fixed rate, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Wednesday.
The woman told investigators she refused and Kahn locked the doors, cut off the engine and demanded she pay him the 10 percent tip.
The sheriff's office said the woman argued with the driver for about 30 minutes before calling 911. Deputies arrived and said Kahn initially told them the 10 percent was to cover the credit card transaction fee, but they discovered the company did not have a policy of making customers pay any such fee.
Kahn was arrested and charged with extortion, false imprisonment and simple assault. The New Orleans Taxicab Regulation Bureau seized his permit, the sheriff's office said.
