PHILADELPHIA, June 14 (UPI) -- The United States marked Flag Day Monday to commemorate the adoption of the first version of the U.S. flag by revolutionaries in Philadelphia in 1777.
President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day in 1916, but the day is not a federal holiday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday.
The flag, then 13 stripes and 13 stars, was adopted by the Second Continental Congress 233 years ago. Legend holds it was designed by Betsy Ross, who created many of the flags in her shop after the revolution, but historians say her involvement in the original design may be more historical myth than historical fact.
