Too much odor in suburbs' natural gas

DETROIT, June 11 (UPI) -- Metro Detroit energy officials said they rerouted gas flow for about 500 suburban customers because the supply had been infused with too much odorizing agent.

DTE Energy said they received multiple calls about gas leaks in Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe and the surrounding area Wednesday night and Thursday morning and investigators determined there were no leaks, but rather an overabundance of odorizing agent in the natural gas flow, The Detroit News reported.

Spokesman Scott Simons said the odorless natural gas is paired with the odorizing agent so customers can detect leaks and officials have not yet determined what caused the problem that began late Wednesday.

Simons said officials are working to correct the problem and affected customers are in the meantime receiving gas flow from the west side of the system, which was not affected.

Baby lemur joins Detroit zoo exhibit

DETROIT, June 11 (UPI) -- The Detroit Zoo said Kintana, a baby lemur born May 8 at the facility, went on display to the public for the first time Thursday.

The zoo said Kintana, whose name is Malagasy for "star," is now at her permanent home in the lemur habitat with parents Fleur and Goodall and twins Alina and Aloke, born to the older lemurs in June 2009, The Detroit Free Press reported.

"Kintana is a welcome addition to a small population of captive lemurs that could help keep this species from extinction," said Scott Carter, the zoo's chief life sciences officer.

He said there are only about 215 lemurs at North American zoos.

Chicago hot dogs come to White House

WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) -- The owner of a Chicago hot dog eatery was brought to the White House to represent Midwestern food at the annual congressional picnic.

Mike Payne, the owner of Byron's Hot Dogs in Chicago, said he was contacted by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and brought to Washington to work Tuesday's event, making hot dogs from 7 a.m. until nearly 10 p.m., the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Payne said White House chief chef Cristeta Comerford had to order all of his ingredients because outside ingredients are forbidden at the picnic. He said Comerford was able to track down Vienna dogs, yellow mustard, shredded lettuce, diced onions, sliced cucumbers, green peppers, tomatoes, hot peppers, celery salt and dill pickles.

MASAKA, Uganda, June 11 (UPI) -- Police in Uganda said they were investigating the origins and purpose of a huge marijuana crop found in the garden of a convent.

Masaka district police officials said investigators discovered a marijuana plantation covering an entire acre of land in the gardens of the convent, which was not specifically identified by police, the BBC reported.

Southern regional commander Emmanuel Muhuirwe said two porters were arrested and released on bail pending charges while two nuns were questioned but not arrested.

One of the nuns was quoted as saying the marijuana was used as a health treatment for the convent's pigs and other farm animals.
