1 missing tortoise found, 1 at large

FOREST LAKE, Minn., June 8 (UPI) -- A Minnesota woman said Monday one of her two pet tortoises, which ran away from home on a sunny day 10 days ago, has been found.

"Granite did make his way home!" Chrystal Penney of Forest Lake told United Press International in an e-mail. "I went to the pet store and sure enough it was him!! I just keep hoping and praying that Ajia will find her way home soon too!"

Penney, 25, had put her plea out on craigslist.org, offering a reward for help in reuniting her with Ajia, a 7-year-old adult female Russian tortoise about 10 inches in diameter, and Granite, a slightly smaller adult male Greek tortoise about 5 or 6 years old, which vamoosed from the pen where they had been basking in the sun on the Saturday before Memorial Day.

"I'm very attached to my tortoises. They're like my dog," she told UPI earlier in the day before Granite turned up. "I want them back."

You might think tortoises don't move very fast and would have a hard time running away from home, but Penney says they're actually pretty quick.

"They get pretty crazy this time of year and like to take off and run around," she said. "People say 'How can you lose a turtle or a tortoise,' but they must have gone as fast as they could across the yard. Within 10 minutes of looking in on them they were gone. I've searched anywhere and everywhere."

She said her home is near woods and ponds so there are "a lot of hiding places."

"I've even been going into the swap. It was yucky and gross," she said.

"They have a one-track mind. When they start heading in a direction they keep going that way until they are forced to turn around."

Refugee corrects birthday after 10 years

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 8 (UPI) -- A Swedish court ruled a Cambodian man could change his Swedish Tax Agency records to reflect his true age, 12 years older than the records indicate.

The man, who was brought to Sweden by the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees after his release from a Cambodian military prison, told the court he gave the agency false information -- a birth date of Jan. 1, 1960, to make it more difficult for Cambodian authorities to track him down, The Local reported.

However, he told the administrative court of appeal that he now feels secure enough after 10 years in Sweden to give authorities his true birthday, Aug. 12, 1947.

The Tax Agency previously rejected the man's claim for what officials claimed was lack of sufficiently reliable proof. However, the appeals court accepted the evidence, including copies of an identification card and his release form from the Cambodian prison.

"The court considers that it should be sufficient if on assessment the new details appear to be correct when compared to the older information and taking into account the wider circumstances," the court's decision read.

52-pound fish found dead at 40 years old

YATELEY, England, June 8 (UPI) -- British fishing enthusiasts are mourning the death of a 52-pound leather carp that was caught and set free an estimated 1,000 times during its lifetime.

The fish, dubbed Heather the Leather by the angling community, was found dead by workers at the Yateley, England, pond and is believed to have died of old age at an estimated 40 years, The Sun reported.

"This is a sad day for carp fishermen up and down the country. Heather was a legend, it just won't be the same without her," carp fishing expert Dave McQuilkin said.

Fans of the fallen fish said they were planning to install a headstone for Heather at the pond.

"Heather was far and away the most famous fish in Britain. She was the Dame Judi Dench of the fish world," said Ben Weir of Angler's Mail magazine, referring to the Oscar-winning star of "Shakespeare in Love."

Poll: Men more prone to vacation injuries

LONDON, June 8 (UPI) -- A travel agency survey suggests British men are three times as likely as women to injure themselves accidentally during vacations.

Travel agency Sunshine.co.uk said its online poll of about 2,000 Britons found 34 percent of male respondents and 11 percent of female respondents had suffered injuries while on vacations, The Mirror reported.

The company said the most common causes of injury cited by respondents were falls resulting from slippery pool areas, or too much to drink.

"This shows that women obviously take more care and responsibility," spokesman Chris Brown said. "While men are more up for having fun and throwing caution to the wind during vacations, their female counterparts keep a level head and consciously try to avoid accidents and illness."
