Bear spotted three times around Wis. town

VERONA, Wis., June 4 (UPI) -- Police in a Wisconsin town said a black bear was spotted three times in various locations around the town Thursday and Friday.

Verona police said a Jenna Drive resident first reported the bear in her back yard at about 4 a.m. Thursday, and the animal was next spotted by a police sergeant at 10:20 p.m. Thursday on the Military Ridge bike trail and a state Department of Natural Resources game warden was called in, The (Madison) Capital Times reported Friday.

"The bear went up a tree," police Lt. David Dresser said. "The warden identified it as a male black bear weighing about 150 pounds."

Dresser said the warden decided to let the bear continue on its way.

"He wasn't posing an immediate threat," Dresser said.

The animal was next spotted shortly after midnight Friday near St. Andrew Church.

"The bear was last seen walking into a wooded area near Badger Prairie County Park," Dresser said.
