Dog tags found after 66 years

BUDA, Texas, May 31 (UPI) -- A Texas man said he recently received correspondence from an Italian man who found his father's lost dog tags on a World War II battlefield.

Steve Glomb of Buda said his father, Oscar Glomb, who died in 1998, lost his dog tags along with his ring and a medallion when he was carried wounded from a June 1944 battle near Gavorrano, Italy, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Monday.

Glomb said he received a message on his answering machine last month from Daniele Bianchini, a retired police inspector, who said he found Oscar Glomb's belongings while searching the battle site with a metal detector. He said a series of e-mails followed and Bianchini mailed the items back to the family. They arrived April 23.

Dorothy Glomb, 85, Oscar's widow, was given the items by her son.

"To me, it's like a miracle to have this come back now. It means so much to me because he kept wanting to get those dog tags back," she said. "It brings closure. It's something he wanted done, and it's finally accomplished. We are just so thankful."
