CLEVELAND, May 13 (UPI) -- Thieves who stole a hearse from a Cleveland crematory left a note with the abandoned vehicle saying where they had dumped the body, police said.
The hearse was taken from Greenfield Crematory late Tuesday or early Wednesday, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Police said the thieves may have used it to haul computer equipment they also stole.
"I don't know when exactly they realized there was a body in the van but they found the body and dumped it," Zach Nicol, the assistant manager at Greenfield, told WJW-TV.
The hearse was discovered blocking a driveway at about 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. The note said the body, a woman, was at an intersection about 2 miles away.
The body had been delivered to the crematory late Tuesday and was scheduled for cremation Wednesday. It had been left on a gurney inside the hearse parked in a locked garage.
Nicol apologized to the woman's family.
"I mean, I'm very sorry that this had to happen, it's unfortunate. But I mean, we were robbed," Nicol said.
Police say anyone charged with the crime could face an additional count of abuse of a corpse.
