Survey: Librarians get frisky in stacks

NEW YORK, April 19 (UPI) -- A 1992 survey of 5,000 U.S. librarians, long withheld by a professional journal, found one in five respondents had engaged in sexual trysts among the stacks.

Will Manly, who said the New York-based Wilson Library Bulletin withheld the results of his survey in 1992, published results recently on his Web site indicating 51 percent of librarians in the early 90s were willing to pose nude for money and 61 percent of respondents admitting to renting an X-rated film, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

Manly said the survey questions were printed in the now-defunct journal, but bosses withheld the results and fired him for the saucy survey, which he said received 5,000 responses from librarians.

The survey also found 22 percent of respondents believed condom dispensers in library bathrooms would be a good idea and 14 percent said they had been sexually harassed by a patron.

George Washington owes library fines

NEW YORK, April 19 (UPI) -- A New York library said George Washington, the first president of the United States, owes $300,000 in late fees for two books he never returned.

The New York Society Library said President Washington visited the facility Oct. 5, 1789, and borrowed international relations treatise "Law of Nations" and Vol. 12 of the British Parliament transcript series "Commons Debates," the New York Daily News reported Monday.

Officials said the books, which were due Nov. 2 of that same year, have been compiling late fees of a few pennies a day ever since.

"We're not actively pursuing the overdue fines," head librarian Mark Bartlett joked. "But we would be very happy if we were able to get the books back."

Limo repossessed during prom

JENKS, Okla., April 19 (UPI) -- A group of Oklahoma high school students said they had just arrived for their prom in a rented limousine when the vehicle was repossessed.

The students said they were standing outside of the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks at the start of Friday's event when a man jumped into the driver's seat of the rented Galaxy Limo vehicle, KTUL-TV, Tulsa, Okla., reported Monday.

"There was a guy getting into our limo who was not the driver because our driver was standing next to us," Landon Wiland said.

Jody Steck, Wiland's aunt, witnessed the incident with her husband and son and chased the vehicle they believed was being stolen.

"We just took off after him, we were about a minute behind him but we caught up easily. Can't really go too fast in a limo," Steck said.

She said she called 911 and police stopped the limo, leading the driver to reveal his true identity, a repo man with Chamras Asset Recovery Specialists.

Galaxy Limo owner Jim Nicolotti said he had a deal worked out with his bank but a miscommunication between the lender and the repossession company led to the incident.

Wiland said he and his friends had their cars at the aquarium and were able to drive home safely.

Town won't allow dog to run for mayor

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, April 19 (UPI) -- A town east of Toronto refused to allow a 3-year-old Labrador retriever to register as a mayoral candidate Monday for municipal elections this fall.

Marven Whidden took Genny on a leash into the Bowmanville town hall to register her as a candidate but was flatly turned down by clerk Patti Barrie, the Toronto Star reported.

"I'm sorry. We won't be accepting nominations for a dog," Barrie said. "She's not a person."

Whidden told the newspaper he first speculated on entering Genny in the race 10 days ago on his blog, which was met with international support and encouragement.

"It's taken off in a way I never imagined in my wildest dreams," said Whidden. "My dog's done more to spark talk about the election and get people out to vote than any (public relations) firm ever could."

Whidden said he wouldn't rule out a write-in campaign for the dog.

"It sends a huge message to politicians when people say, 'I'd vote for a dog before I'd vote for you again,'" he said.
