Kennedy said financial institutions, insurance companies other businesses are required to surrender unclaimed property to the State Treasurer's Office if they are unable to reach the property's owners for five years, and the annual program is aimed at tracking down the owners and returning their money and valuables.

She said the state returned $25 million worth of cash and goods to citizens during last year's campaign. The treasurer said nearly $200 million has been returned during the past 20 years.
