DES MOINES, Iowa, April 1 (UPI) -- Iowa police said the recipients of a package containing 53 pounds of marijuana addressed to Thomas Jefferson were robbed by the package's apparent real owner.
Police said Tanor Jimmison, 17, of Des Moines, whose residence is funded through Youth Homes of Mid-America, received the package, which bore his address but the name Thomas Jefferson, Tuesday and left it inside while he left for a short time with YHMA employee Tanya Cano, who checks in on Jimmison once a day, the Des Moines (Iowa) Register reported Thursday.
The pair said they returned and opened the package, discovering 53 pounds of marijuana. They said they were on the way out the door to report the package to Cano's supervisor when they were confronted by a man with a handgun demanding they hand over the drugs.
The man left with the package, Cano and Jimmison told police.
Police said the man took a container from inside the package, but left behind the packing materials. The box listed the weight of its contents.
