GREEN BAY, Wis., March 16 (UPI) -- City workers in Green Bay, Wis., said they are taking special measures to prevent the theft of signs for a road named Mullet Place.

Chris Pirlot, public works operation manager for Green Bay, said the Mullet Place signs at two intersections were placed high up on telephone poles because of frequent thefts from pranksters apparently motivated by the oft-mocked mullet hairstyle popular in the 1980s, the Green bay Press-Gazette reported Tuesday.

"My assumption had always been someone's stuck in the '80s and thinks it's an amusing sign. But that's pure speculation," Pirlot said.

He said the city previously had no signs at the intersections for about three years because of the frequent thefts. Officials said each sign costs about $50 to $60 to replace and install.

Local historian Mary Jane Herber said the street was named in the 1820s as a tribute to John Mullett, a surveyor who worked on private land claims in the area.
