NEW YORK, March 12 (UPI) -- A New York funeral director said a minivan outside the business was still carrying a corpse when it was towed for being parked illegally.

Paul DeNigris said he was shocked when he walked out of Redden's Funeral Home early Monday afternoon and discovered the minivan holding a body bound for a flight at New Jersey's Newark Airport was gone, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

DeNigris said he quickly learned the vehicle had been towed and taken to a city tow pound. Police said the vehicle had been ticketed for parking in an illegal zone at 9:22 a.m. and was towed at 12:07 p.m.

"There was nothing to indicate it was more than just an illegally parked car," Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said.

DeNigris said the van and body were back in his care about 90 minutes after the towing.

He said the tow pound waived a $185 fee and he plans to fight the $115 parking ticket.

"It's frustrating," DeNigris said. "It's aggravating. But this is New York City. Things like this are not uncommon."
