HARRODSBURG, Ky., March 10 (UPI) -- A Kentucky woman said she did not know she was pregnant before she delivered her baby by herself on the floor of her home's bathroom.

Kelly Bottom, 32, of Harrodsburg, Ky., said she felt some discomfort while doing laundry at about 2 p.m. Thursday and went into the bathroom before the pain intensified and she realized the feeling was contractions, The (Danville) Advocate-Messenger reported Wednesday.

Bottom said she delivered the baby boy on the floor of her bathroom and cut the umbilical cord herself. She said she was unable to reach the child's father, Ronnie Sims, because he was at work, so she then had to clean herself and the new baby off and pick up her 7-year-old from school before seeking medical attention.

"When we first got to the emergency room, the woman there thought I meant I had him a few weeks and not a few hours before," Bottom said.

Ronnie Sims said doctors told the surprised parents the baby, Brian Keith Sims, had actually been past due. He weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces when he was examined at the hospital.

Group making alligator wrestling a sport

HOLLYWOOD, Fla., March 10 (UPI) -- Members of a U.S. organization dedicated to making alligator wrestling a legitimate sport say facing the large reptiles is not actually that scary.

The Miami Herald said Tuesday to reinforce its point, Freestyle Alligator Wrestling Competitions is holding a competition this weekend at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino near Hollywood, Fla.

James Holt, who wrestled an alligator Tuesday to help promote the event, said the key to facing down one of the potentially deadly animals is mental acuteness.

"The hardest part is making sure you're in the right frame of mind," said Holt, who took on an 8-foot gator Tuesday. "You gotta be in the moment."

"This is going to be a sport that hopefully goes to a global level," Holt added.

Jimmy Riffle, a planned contestant in this weekend's event, offered additional advice to any would-be alligator wrestlers nationwide.

"You cannot be afraid to get bit," Riffle told the Herald.

Senior banned from going to weddings

ANKARA, Turkey, March 10 (UPI) -- A Turkish court imposed an unexplained penalty of banning a 77-year-old woman from attending weddings for not paying her electric bill.

The woman identified only as Sevim K. was ordered to pay her outstanding bill and, for reasons the court didn't give, forbidden from attending weddings for five months, the Anatolia News Agency reported from Erzurum Wednesday.

Court heard the woman removed a blocking seal on her home's electric meter that utility workers installed after she hadn't paid her bill for several months.

She testified she had been ill for some time, needed the electricity and had asked a passerby to help remove the seal. She said she was unaware she had been cut off for non-payment, the report said.

Python on the loose in English city?

NORTHAMPTON, England, March 10 (UPI) -- Residents of an English city were warned Wednesday that a Burmese python might be on the loose.

Police said a passerby reported seeing the snake Tuesday evening in a wooded area next to a housing subdivision in the Lingwood neighborhood of Northampton, The Daily Telegraph reported. The snake was described as being green and "several feet long."

Burmese pythons are constrictors and are one of the world's largest snakes. They can grow to be about 20 feet long.

Pythons are popular pets, at least until they become too big to handle comfortably and too expensive to feed. In Florida, Burmese pythons believed to be descended from released pets have become established in the Everglades and have been known to take on alligators.

Police said the snake might be a green Burmese python. They said anyone who spots the snake should not try to approach it, although pythons are not venomous, and should call police.

Northampton is 70 miles northwest of London.
