ANKARA, Turkey, March 10 (UPI) -- A Turkish court imposed an unexplained penalty of banning a 77-year-old woman from attending weddings for not paying her electric bill.

The woman identified only as Sevim K. was ordered to pay her outstanding bill and, for reasons the court didn't give, forbidden from attending weddings for five months, the Anatolia News Agency reported from Erzurum Wednesday.

Court heard the woman removed a blocking seal on her home's electric meter that utility workers installed after she hadn't paid her bill for several months.

She testified she had been ill for some time, needed the electricity and had asked a passerby to help remove the seal. She said she was unaware she had been cut off for non-payment, the report said.
