MADISON, Wis., March 5 (UPI) -- More than 2,300 cheeses and butters will be on hand this month for Wisconsin's 28th biennial World Championship Cheese Contest, planners say.
Jane Cisler of the Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association says creative cheesemakers will compete for awards in 80 separate categories, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
Cisler says some categories have grown so much over the years that they've had to be divided.
The event in Madison March 16-18 is open to the public.
Judging will begin on the morning of March 18 with the champion announced at noon, Cisler said.
In the championship round, all gold-medal class winners are re-evaluated by an international judging team.
The 2008 champion cheese was a Gruyere from Switzerland.
