CHAMPAIGN, Ill., March 5 (UPI) -- A University of Illinois student said the Facebook event he created for the school's Unofficial St. Patrick's Day has more than 26,000 RSVPs.
Daniel Stich said he created the event in February to spread awareness of Friday's celebration in Champaign-Urbana, which is traditionally marked by trips to bars and a hearty amount of private parties, and since then 18,000 Facebook users have marked their intention to attend with another 8,600 marking "maybe attending," the Champaign News-Gazette reported Friday.
"I wasn't expecting it to catch on that much," Stich said of the Facebook event.
He said the promised attendees include thousands of students from all across Illinois and several from out of state.
