ATLANTA, March 5 (UPI) -- AT&T officials said they are asking the Georgia Public Service Commission for permission to stop delivering the white pages in 18 areas of the state.

The company said it stopped automatic delivery in one area in 2008 and only 1 percent of customers put in a request for white pages phone books, leading officials to request an end to automatic delivery in communities including Gwinnett County, Marietta and Cumming-Forsyth-Roswell-Alpharetta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

The officials said residents would still be able to request delivery of the residential directory. Yellow pages and business white pages phone books would continue to be delivered automatically.

AT&T said in its request that delivering the residential white pages, which do not generate advertising revenue for the company, has been "a substantial hardship."

Officials did not say how much money they expect to save with the optional delivery plan, labeled "The Residential White Pages Consumer Choice Program" by the company.
