NORTH LUFFENHAM, England, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A British animal charity awarded a bravery medal to a bomb-sniffing dog that twice alerted troops to the presence of explosives in Afghanistan.

The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals said Treo, a 9-year-old black Labrador handled by Sgt. Dave Heyhoe, was awarded the Dickin Medal, the highest honor for the military canine, The Sun reported Wednesday.

The charity said Treo sniffed out a "daisy chain" of explosive devices meant for British troops in Afghanistan Aug. 15, 2008, and alerted his handler to further bombs during an operation the following month.

"Treo's work involves searching for arms and explosives out on the ground to the forefront of the troops," Heyhoe said. "What we're trying to do is make sure there are no death-dealing agents out there to make sure there is no harm to the troops behind us.

"It's very important. We are part and parcel of the search element. We're not the ultimate answer but we are an aid to search," he said. "Another aid would be the metal detector -- but Treo is a four-legged variety."
