UNION, Ohio, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- An Ohio high school junior has been thwarted in her ambition to run for Republican precinct representative in Clermont County.
The Ohio secretary of state sent an e-mail message a few minutes after Emma Breyer, 17, filed her candidacy Tuesday with the county board of elections, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. The decision was that she was too young to run in the May 4 primary.
She had been told earlier she was eligible to run since she turns 18 in October, before the Nov. 2 election.
Emma plans to review her options with a lawyer before withdrawing.
Kirk Walter, the election counsel with the secretary of state, said his revised opinion was because the primary is the final election for party precinct representatives.
Emma plans to take an Advanced Placement American Government class during her senior year at St. Ursula Academy where one of the requirements is working on a political campaign. She hoped her own campaign would be the one she worked on.
If that doesn't work, she can always work for her father. Daniel Breyer, chief deputy prosecutor for the county, is running for the Court of Common Pleas.
