MONTREAL, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Canadian police in Montreal suspect rivals were responsible for a fake tip about a dead body in a house that actually was a marijuana farm.

Police got an anonymous 911 emergency call at 11:45 p.m. Monday night about a corpse in a house in suburban Laval, Constable Nathalie Lorrain told The (Montreal) Gazette. Officers got no answer at the front door and circled the house and then found the front door ajar, she said.

Inside, police found a 42-year-old man and 30-year-old woman, but no corpse, Lorrain said.

However, there was a telltale odor coming from the basement.

"Right away the officers smelled the pot," Lorrain said.

Officers found about 500 marijuana plants growing, all only about a foot high, she said.

Police speculate the fake tip about a body either came from a drug-growing competitor or a neighbor irritated by the smell of the plants, the report said.
